Bolshoi theatre wind quintet

The Golden Age of the Wind Quintet

On 24 November 2015 the Bolshoi Wind Quintet will perform a new recital programme in Beethoven Hall: The Golden Age of the Wind Quintet.

The musicians return to the origins of the genre. They will play one of the three quintets published in 1803 by Giuseppe Cambini (1746–1825), the first composer to use the combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn.

An operatic potpourri, a much-loved genre of its time, appears in the form of Potpourri fantastico by the Italian flute virtuoso Giulio Briccialdi (1818–1881), based on Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

August Klughardt (1847–1902), a representative of the New German School and pupil of Franz Liszt, wrote his Quintet, Op. 79, in 1898. Its score breathes Romanticism, using woodwind colours differently from earlier periods.

These charming rarities, seldom heard on the concert platform, appear alongside works by Johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Join us for what promises to be a fascinating concert.
