Bolshoi theatre wind quintet

Presenting A Night at the Bolshoi

The album A Night at the Bolshoi is the ensemble’s tribute to the great composers whose operas and ballets form the heart of the Bolshoi Theatre repertoire.

On 18 October 2021, at the Russian National Museum of Music, listeners will discover the Bolshoi Wind Quintet’s new interpretations. Rooted in the orchestra’s performing traditions, these familiar works also reveal the ensemble’s own musical personality.

The fantasies, potpourris and intermezzi written for the album showcase the virtuosity of the five musicians. The programme combines original pieces specially composed for the ensemble with arrangements of classic opera and ballet excerpts, evoking performances at Russia’s principal musical theatre.

Unlike a string or brass quintet, a classical wind quintet brings together instruments of very different kinds. Like colours on a painter’s palette, their five distinctive timbres create a remarkable range of shades and gradations: five elements, five forces of nature, five human senses.
